Students have been working diligently to complete their Student Portfolio Projects: Resume, Cover Letter and Interview Questions. Students are also in the midst of mock interviews.
In order to make all aspects of the Portfolio Projects are done well, I have postponed the quiz until after the break. It will most likely be on Tuesday, Oct. 4th. There will be a quiz on Thurs. over what we have learned about employability skills, first impressions, interview do's and don'ts and careers to finish up this unit.
We will begin learning about entrepreneurship and personal financial literacy next. Students are learning to build their own resume and write a cover letter to accompany the resume. Students were given the opportunity to explore several job posting websites in order to see what jobs are available to help with writing their resume and cover letter. If students preferred, they could alternatively prepare their resume and cover letter to send to a college of their choice. Examples of resume and cover letter formats are located in the Student Portfolio Project. Criteria such as acceptable fonts and font sizes are also included there.
Students were also given the most common interview questions to think about and answer in Schoology. Grading rubrics for each item: resume, cover letter and interview questions are all located in Schoology. All assignments are due end of period on Sept. 20. Each of these assignments will count toward the unit's summative assessment. The final part of their summative assessment for this unit will be a mock interview where students will have to participate in a 5-7 minute interview with me or another professional. Interviews will begin on Wed. and continue until we are done. Students will be signing up for a time slot on Monday, Sept. 19. Students will also need to Dress for Success. Business casual attire will be acceptable. Students should not be asking their parents to go shopping for clothing. They should be using what they have currently. If they are unsure if their interview outfit will meet the criteria, students should talk with me. Examples of acceptable attire will be presented to students on Monday. All assignments related to this unit are located in the Careers and 21st Century Employability Skills Folder in Schoology. Students completed an employability skills checklist today and learned how those skills will be important to understand when completing job applications, resumes and for interviews.
Students can practice learning the terminology checking out the quizlet called employability skills checklist. Want to make sure you get that job or into that college? Then students need to make sure they know the most common interview questions that will be asked of them.
Students also watched some interview do's and don'ts videos and should be completing The Job Interview Guided Notes. We are in discussion about first impressions and body language and how much they matter in the business world especially when it comes to interviewing for a job and also for networking.
If you missed today's videos, check them out on my video page. Make sure you also pull up The Job Interview - Guided Notes in Schoology to complete notes on the related videos. Students should be working to finish their Career Exploration Assignment. If they are in need of videos to view regarding their chosen careers, visit my video page and click on the button for Career Video from home. They can also use click on the Thrively button from home and view the career videos on that website. Cobb County blocks many of the video sites so students cannot do this in class, thus they should make every effort to be in class when I show the videos.
Students have begun working on the Strength Scavenger Hunt. If done well, this assignment could give students up to 3 extra credit points toward the Unit Test for Careers and Employability. I will do whatever I can to help students be successful in my class. Students can make appointments to come in before school to make up missed work, re-test or receive extra help.
Generally, students may come every Mon. , Tues., Wed., and Fri. mornings, but they need to email me or talk to me the day before so that I can give them a pass to be able to come to me as early as 7:50 am. I also regularly drop by the cafeteria at 7:50 am to pick up any students who want take advantage of this time. Students not there by 7:50 am will need to have the pass given to them the day before by me, or parents can write a note that says they are to come to see me. Be sure to checkout the videos page for any videos needed to complete your class assignments.
